SCRAP: A FILM BY LUCAS NORTHWOOD
Scrap is a robot spaghetti western. The tale follows a small robot, fittingly named Scrap. Set in a barren ghost town, Scrap's options for friends are quite scarce. Even worse, he isn't seen by them as an equal and is frequently ignored. Perhaps a common enemy could put everything in perspective and Scrap's true value can be revealed to the others?

POSTER
During the process of lighting and comping Lucas's poster we had not found the final bg/matte painting to light for so some slight adjustments had to be made in comp.
FILM STILLS / BREAKDOWNS
Lucas was tasked with creating one of the most ambitious solo thesis films of our graduating class. There wasn't a more passionate, or hardworking student in the senior year. Of course, he needed a few friends to help him with unforeseen circumstances. I was tasked with helping him develop his simple, yet fitting style for his environment along with Austin Yawney. While Austin help with majority of the texturing, I constructed a simple lighting rig, and comp script that could easily be duplicated along each shots with minor adjustments.

The lighting and comp definitely felt like it needed to compliment the simplicity of Scrap. The characters, to the town, being minimalist with large shapes and no small detail. I came up with a three point lighting set up which would simulate the hot and dry desert that surrounded the town. Which would lead to an overexposed frame in comp, without much contrast. A very subtle heatwave can be seen in distant shots, along with the bloom blurring the forms.
The same can be said about Scraped as was said for Poached: it is impossible to not want to help out passionate and driven people.
Our graduating class proved that time and time again.

I learned a lot from having the pleasure to work on Lucas's thesis film and seeing it finally come to life.
Please give Scrap a watch if you haven't! Spread the word.
